Do I Need Lab Work Before Starting Hormone Therapy?
At Trinity Health Plus, yes. Every hormone patient, man or woman, gets a baseline lab panel before starting treatment. Here's why, and what we look for.
Why we test everyone
Symptoms like fatigue, low libido, poor sleep, weight gain, and mood changes can come from many causes, including thyroid problems, blood sugar issues, anemia, sleep apnea, or depression. A baseline panel helps us confirm what's really going on. It also tells us whether hormone therapy is safe for you and gives us a starting point to measure your progress against.
What's included for everyone
Your baseline panel checks your thyroid, blood counts, cholesterol, blood sugar, and liver and kidney function. Then we add tests specific to you.
For men
Low testosterone has to be confirmed with at least two early morning, fasting blood tests, because levels peak early in the day and can swing from one day to the next. We also check your red blood cell count, since testosterone can raise it, and a PSA for men over 40 to screen for prostate concerns. Depending on your history, we may also check other hormones to understand why your testosterone is low in the first place. If you’re hoping to have children, tell us up front. Testosterone therapy can lower sperm production, and that changes how we approach treatment.
For women
If you're over 45 and have classic menopause symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, and irregular or stopped periods, you don't need a hormone test to confirm menopause. Hormone levels swing too much during this transition for a single test to tell us much. If you are under 45, or your symptoms don’t fit the typical pattern, hormone testing can help sort out what’s happening. Either way, your baseline panel matters for different reasons: to ensure treatment is safe and to make sure nothing else is driving your symptoms. If we're considering testosterone, we check your baseline level too. We'll also make sure your mammogram and other screenings are up to date.
After you start
Lab work doesn't stop at the first visit. Follow-up testing lets us confirm your dose is working, catch side effects early, and adjust as needed. That ongoing monitoring is a large part of what keeps hormone therapy safe.
What to expect
We'll explain each test in plain language before you go to the lab, so you know exactly what we're checking and why. If you've been wondering whether hormone therapy could help you feel like yourself again, book a visit online with us or call us at 727-758-2990, and we'll walk through it together.
